# v2.5: the fold and the claims built on it move to speculative; P1's falsifier is aimed at P1's target

**Type:** release specification (level 3: the author merges) · **Date:** 11 October 2026 · **Decisions:** the author's dated decisions of 11 October 2026 (`research/lab/13_dated_decisions.md`): D3 "speculative", then, on learning that M2–M5 depend on M1, "A" (all five move); D4 choice A (P1 is about how locality and duration appear to a fold; self-reference accounts for that appearance, not necessary to it; the falsifier is rewritten to that target and read from outside before it replaces the old one) · **Editor:** Claude Opus 5.5 (this wording) · **Implementer:** to be decided by the author (a Claude Sonnet 5.5 agent, cap USD 3, or the editor in session) · **Branch:** `release/v2.5-fold-speculative`

The implementer applies this wording verbatim, keeps frozen records unchanged (lab and floor records, prompts, reception entries, earlier changelog entries, the frozen candidate under `test/`), and makes every test pass. Claim ids keep their letters (M1–M5) so that links and records stay stable.

## What the release says, in one paragraph

The diagnosis stays strong. The fold (M1), and the four claims built on it (M2–M5), move from medium to speculative, because the fold's first falsifier is met on its face: under the four criteria as written, two blind readers passed a stipulated self-repairing build system (floor cycle 11); the count of two orientations is unproven (objection 15), the bearer of persistence undetermined (objection 16), the criteria not yet applied alike by three readers (floor cycle 4), and the pairing of a self-model with self-maintenance is in print (Trukovich 2025; Seth and Tsakiris 2018). They return to medium when the paper states criteria that a fresh blind application, including a reader from another lineage, finds separate people from the build system and its kin. P1's falsifier, which was aimed at physical geometry and met as worded by causal set theory, is replaced by one aimed at what P1 claims.

## C1. Claims graph (`site/claims.json`, `site/argument-graph.js`)

- `version` "2.5". M1, M2, M3, M4, M5: `"tier": "speculative"`. `tiers.counts`: strong 4, medium 0, speculative 8. Keep `tiers.order` and `labels` (the medium tier stays defined and is empty). The `invariant` text stays as it is; it remains true (no medium claims exist).
- Add to M1 a `note`: "Medium until v2.5 (11 October 2026). Moved to speculative by the author's dated decision: the first falsifier is met on its face under the criteria as written (floor cycle 11: two blind readers passed a stipulated self-repairing build system); the count is unproven (objection 15), the bearer of persistence undetermined (objection 16), the criteria not yet applied alike (floor cycle 4), and the pairing of self-model and self-maintenance is in print (Trukovich 2025; Seth and Tsakiris 2018). Returns to medium when the paper states criteria that a fresh blind application, including a reader from another lineage, finds separate people from the build system and its kin."
- Add to each of M2–M5 a `note` (or prepend to an existing one): "Speculative since v2.5 (11 October 2026) because it depends on M1, which moved to speculative; it keeps its id."
- P1 `falsifier` becomes: "A worked account of how a here, a now and passing time appear to a self-modelling system, including how that appearance changes when the system's self-modelling changes, that gives no role to the system's modelling of its own operations and fits the reports and measures at least as well; or evidence that the experienced here and now stay unaltered when a system's modelling of its own operations is removed or disrupted."
- Add to P1 a `note`: "Until v2.5 P1's falsifier read 'Accounts of non-fundamental spacetime that assign no role to perspective'. Aimed at physical geometry, which P1 does not claim, it was met as worded by causal set theory (Bombelli, Lee, Meyer and Sorkin 1987, 'Space-time as a causal set'). The author decided on 11 October 2026 that P1 is about how locality and duration appear to a fold, and that it claims self-reference accounts for that appearance, not that it is necessary to it; the falsifier was rewritten to that target and read from outside before replacing the old one. The joint 0.3 with P2 stays, because it never priced a physics result."
- `argument-graph.js`: mirror the same tiers and P1 falsifier text; update the header comment that speaks of "strong or medium" claims standing so it stays true; make sure the graph still renders well with an empty medium tier (hide an empty tier column, or label it "none since v2.5"; prefer the smaller code change that renders cleanly at desktop and phone widths).

## C2. The claims page (`site/argument.html`)

- Replace "The claims are <strong>S1–S4</strong> (strong), <strong>M1–M5</strong> (medium), and <strong>P1–P3</strong> (speculative)." with: "The claims are <strong>S1–S4</strong> (strong) and <strong>M1–M5</strong> and <strong>P1–P3</strong> (speculative). M1–M5 were medium until v2.5 (11 October 2026); they keep their names."
- In the next paragraph replace "switch off all three speculative claims: every strong and medium claim still stands because none depends on that tier." with: "switch off the speculative claims: every strong claim still stands because none depends on that tier."
- The ledger heading "Medium claims" becomes "Claims built on the fold (speculative since v2.5)", with a one-line paragraph under it: "These five were graded medium until 11 October 2026. They moved to speculative with the fold (M1), whose criteria as written also admit a self-repairing build system; they return to medium when stated criteria separate people from such systems in a fresh blind application." Update P1's "Weakens if" line to the new falsifier. Adjust any remaining sentence on the page that counts tiers.

## C3. The paper (`site/downloads/Space_Immanence_Working_Paper.md`, `md/…`, `site/paper.html`)

- Replace the heading "**Medium claims** (defensible with work, worth proposing, require further development):" with: "**Claims built on the fold** (graded speculative since v2.5, 11 October 2026; they were medium until the fold's first falsifier was met on its face under the criteria as written, and they return to medium when the paper states criteria that a fresh blind application, including a reader from another lineage, finds separate people from a self-repairing build system and its kin):". Keep the five items as they are.
- Leave the "Speculative claims" heading and its three items unchanged.

## C4. The Academic Edition (`site/downloads/Academic_Edition.md`, `site/academic.html`)

Replace "The *bridge* (the fold as the structural link between world-appearance and awareness; predictive processing as its biological implementation) is offered as medium." with: "The *bridge* (the fold as the structural link between world-appearance and awareness; predictive processing as its biological implementation) was offered as medium and, since v2.5 (11 October 2026), is graded speculative with the claims built on it, because the fold's criteria as written also admit a self-repairing build system; it returns to medium when stated criteria separate people from such systems in a fresh blind application." Rebuild its PDF.

## C5. Other pages

- `site/index.html`: the home page's claim columns: move M1–M5 out of "Medium claims" into the speculative column under a sub-heading "Built on the fold (medium until v2.5)", or rename the medium column "Built on the fold (speculative since v2.5)"; choose whichever keeps the layout clean at phone width.
- `site/cohering.html`: "Medium (M4)" and "Medium (M5)" become "Speculative since v2.5 (M4)" and "Speculative since v2.5 (M5)".
- `site/agents.html`: "four strong, five medium, and three speculative" becomes "four strong and eight speculative (M1–M5 were medium until v2.5)"; the invariant descriptions stay.
- `site/objections.html` and `site/downloads/Objections_and_Replies.md`, objection 15's **reply** (never a critic's words): "The claim is graded medium, not strong;" becomes "The claim was graded medium and, since v2.5 (11 October 2026), is graded speculative;".
- `site/llms.txt`, `site/downloads/One_Page_Summary.md` (and its PDF): correct any tier count or description of M1–M5 as medium.

## C6. Version surfaces and record

- `site/state.json`: `version` "2.5", `versionLabel` "v2.5", `versionDate` "2026-10-11", `tiers` {strong 4, medium 0, speculative 8}, add `whatV25Is`: "The fold release: the fold (M1) and the four claims built on it (M2–M5) move from medium to speculative, because the fold's first falsifier is met on its face under the criteria as written; they return to medium when stated criteria separate people from a self-repairing build system in a fresh blind application. P1's falsifier, aimed at physical geometry and met as worded by causal set theory, is replaced by one aimed at how locality and duration appear to a fold. No confidence number moves." `changelogLatest` to the release date.
- Colophons on every page "Space Immanence v2.5 · October 2026"; `paper.html` title, kicker, citation note and JSON-LD; Markdown front matter; `claims.json` version; `llms.txt` version mentions; `agents.html` version span.
- `site/respond.html`: a release entry above v2.4, `<h3>v2.5 — 11 October 2026</h3>`, with the one-paragraph summary above in plain words, linking the dated decisions (`downloads/lab/13_dated_decisions.md` once served) and this specification (`downloads/lab/v2.5/00_SPEC.md`).
- Serve `research/lab/13_dated_decisions.md` (updated copy at `site/downloads/lab/13_dated_decisions.md`) and this specification and its reads under `site/downloads/lab/v2.5/`.
- Rebuild the feed and the paper, Academic Edition and summary PDFs. Update tests pinned to v2.4 deliberately, including `test/claim-graph.test.mjs` (survivors when the speculative tier is switched off: exactly S1–S4) and the state-drift tier counts; add `test/v25-fold-speculative.test.mjs` asserting the tiers, notes, P1 falsifier, the paper heading, the Academic Edition sentence and objection 15's reply. `CLAUDE.md`: "Current: v2.5 (11 October 2026), the fold release."

## What would count against this

- A surface left calling M1–M5 medium, or counting five medium claims.
- P1's new falsifier being unadjudicable: if "fits the reports and measures at least as well" cannot be judged, the clause repeats the problem of the old rewording (`research/lab/14_p1_correction/01_read_astra.md`); the outside read must say so.
- The release reading as a retreat from the proposal rather than a statement of where it stands: the claims' content does not change, only how sure the site says it is.
