# v2.3 repairs: the exact changes, for the implementing agent and for the author

**Type:** release specification (level 3: the author approves the merge) · **Date:** 30 September 2026 · **Source:** "Space Immanence critique and research directions", an AI-assisted review commissioned by the author from Coby, his personal AI agent, dated 1 October 2026; four of its findings checked by the editor against the live site and confirmed · **Editor:** Claude Opus 5.5 (wrote this wording) · **Implementer:** a Claude Sonnet 5.5 agent (mechanical edits across surfaces) · **Cap:** USD 10 in Claude tokens for this and the List mapping note together (the author: "Feel free to outsource work to the new Sonnet 5.5 model", 30 September 2026, on the editor's three proposals); two Codex calls · **Branch:** `release/v2.3-repairs`; nothing merges without the author

The wording below is the editor's proposal. The implementer applies it verbatim to every served surface where the changed text appears, keeps frozen records (lab records, prompts, packets, quotations inside research files, reception entries) unchanged, and makes the drift and style tests pass.

## R1. The paper's universality paragraph (Part VI)

Replace, in `md/Space_Immanence_Working_Paper.md`, `site/downloads/Space_Immanence_Working_Paper.md` and `site/paper.html` (and the PDF rebuilt from the Markdown):

> **The universality gap.** The two-orientation topology is robust in human contemplative phenomenology. Whether it is a universal feature of any fold or a human-specific cross-section of something richer is not yet settled by the evidence we have. The contemplative convergence is strong evidence either way: it tells us something real either about the structure of self-reference itself or about the structure of human self-reference. Which it tells us is empirically underdetermined.

with:

> **The universality gap.** The two-orientation topology is an interpretive pattern the proposal reads in human contemplative reports; no systematic collection yet establishes it (see the Academic Edition's section on contemplative phenomenology). If systematic study confirms it, a further question remains open: whether it is a universal feature of any fold or a human-specific cross-section of something richer. Confirmed, it would tell us something real either about the structure of self-reference itself or about the structure of human self-reference. Which it would tell us is empirically underdetermined.

Why: the Academic Edition says no systematic collection establishes the pattern; the paper called it robust and strong evidence. The two editions contradicted each other.

## R2. S4's falsifier, and M3's

S4 ("Contemplative phenomenology is data"). Replace the falsifier "Corpus work finds no stable two-orientation clustering after controls for translation, transmission, and teacher expectation." with:

> Systematic study finds that contemplative reports carry no information about experience beyond what doctrine, teacher expectation and translation predict: reports that do not vary with practice, state or practitioner once those are controlled.

M3 ("Two-orientation: structural or human"). Append to its falsifier, after "would break both readings.":

> Corpus work finding no stable two-orientation clustering after controls for translation, transmission, and teacher expectation would do the same.

Why: a failed clustering would not stop the reports being data; it bears on the two-orientation claim, which is M3's.

## R3. S3 no longer depends on S1

S3 ("Investigate consciousness structurally"): `dependsOn: ["S1"]` becomes `dependsOn: []`, in `site/argument-graph.js` and mirrored in `site/claims.json`. Any served prose that says S3 rests on or follows from S1 is changed to say the recommendation stands whether or not the container diagnosis does.

Why: recommending structural investigation does not need the container diagnosis; as wired, a failure of S1 took a sound research practice down with it.

## R4. Objection 17, added and open

New section `obj17` on `site/objections.html`, after objection 16, in the same markup, and in `site/downloads/Objections_and_Replies.md`:

**17 — The fold's criteria already use time**

**Critic** *(filed September 2026)*: The working paper says the fold's definition uses relations without assuming space or time, that the appearance of locality and duration is the way relational structure holds together for the fold, and that physics may arrive at a pre-spatial relational substrate of which spacetime and consciousness are complementary appearances. Yet the criteria a fold must meet are temporal. Temporal continuity asks the self-model to relate present operations to past and anticipated future ones; self-maintenance is maintenance over time; cohering adds recurrence and conditions on what follows. As an account of experienced duration within physical time, this is unobjectionable. As an account of duration itself, it presupposes what it is meant to explain.

*Source note: raised in an AI-assisted review commissioned by the author (Coby, the author's personal AI agent, 1 October 2026; reception ledger entry 28); the owner edited and adopted the entry. The model's identity is provenance, not authority.*

**Reply:** Accepted, and open. Three routes are available, and the paper has chosen none. (a) Restrict the claim to experienced duration and the present within physical time: the reading floor cycle 6 proposed for P1, held at its outside read. (b) Take a primitive ordering relation as given and derive richer temporal features from it: the route the persistence conjecture took for continuity, at the level of order, without a metric. (c) Give an atemporal constraint model and recover temporal order from it. Routes (b) and (c) need a derivation the paper does not have; a partial order is not relativistic spacetime, and an experienced present is not a metric. Until a route is chosen, two served statements stand open to this objection: Part III's, that the fold's definition uses relations without assuming space or time, and P1's, that the appearance of duration is the way relational structure holds together for the fold.

**Status** (class `obj-status--open`): Open. Bears on P1 and M4, and on M1's temporal criterion. Distinct from objection 16, which concerns what persists, and objection 15, which concerns how many orientations there are.

Wire it as the existing open objections are wired: add `obj17` to the `objections` lists of M1, M4 and P1 in `argument-graph.js` and `claims.json`; add an `openHinges` entry in `claims.json` (status `open`, targets M1, M4, P1, a one-sentence note); update every served count of objections from sixteen to seventeen (objections page, `llms.txt`, `state.json` and any surface the drift test checks). Do not change counts inside frozen records.

## R5. Reception entry 28

Append to `site/reception.json` `entries`, and update `counts` to received 28, published 28, revisionsCaused 21 (and any surface that displays the counts):

- date: `2026-09-30`
- origin: `autonomous-agent`
- target: `general`
- failureMode: `level_promotion`
- summary: "AI-assisted review commissioned by the author from Coby, his personal AI agent (dated 1 October 2026), using two simulated disciplinary lenses (philosophy of mind; foundations of physics), disclosed as AI-generated and not specialist review. Central diagnosis: across the paper, a legitimate distinction at one level is promoted into an explanation at another: structural access into phenomenal presence, representation into physical geometry, process description into explanation of occurrence. Specific findings: the container diagnosis does not yet reach the hard problem's entailment form; two roles do not establish two primitive orientations; the four criteria need a stated job (necessary, sufficient, or candidate selection); observer relativity in physics is not phenomenal perspective; the fold's criteria already use time; the paper's description of contemplative convergence contradicted the Academic Edition; S4's falsifier tested the wrong claim; S3 need not depend on S1. Recommends narrowing the next paper and comparing explicitly with List and with DeBrota and List."
- whatHeld: "The project's worthwhile question, how much difficulty with consciousness and spacetime comes from demanding an external standpoint the subject matter cannot supply; the published nulls and corrections, which the review treats as substantive."
- whatChanged: "Four repairs in v2.3 (changelog): the paper's universality paragraph aligned with the Academic Edition; S4's falsifier rewritten and its old condition moved to M3; S3's dependency on S1 removed; objection 17 added, open. The List comparison is in the lab record. No tier or confidence moves."
- attribution: "Coby, the author's personal AI agent (model not disclosed), commissioned by the author; read by the editor, Claude Opus 5.5, and by GPT-6 Astra before merge."

Publish the review itself as `site/downloads/reception/2026-10-01_coby_review.md`, converted faithfully from the author's file `/Users/cobuskok/Downloads/Space_Immanence_Critique_and_Research_Directions.docx` (text only, headings kept, no edits), and link it from the entry if the schema or page has a place for links; if not, from the changelog paragraph.

## R6. Version v2.3

- `site/state.json`: version `2.3`, versionLabel "the repair release", versionDate `2026-09-30`, released true, and a `whatV23Is` entry in the style of `whatV22Is`: "A repair release: one falsifier rewritten and its old condition moved, one dependency removed, one objection added, one paragraph of the paper corrected. No tier or confidence moved, no claim node added." Update `changelogLatest` as the drift test requires.
- `site/respond.html` changelog, a new entry above v2.2:

> **v2.3 — 30 September 2026.** The repair release: no tier or confidence moved, no claim node added. **What changed:** S4 (contemplative phenomenology is data) now fails if contemplative reports carry no information about experience beyond what doctrine, teacher expectation and translation predict; its old condition, a failed two-orientation clustering, moves to M3, where it bears. S3 (investigate consciousness structurally) no longer depends on S1: the recommendation stands whether or not the container diagnosis does. The paper's universality paragraph no longer calls the two-orientation pattern robust or the contemplative convergence strong evidence; it now matches the Academic Edition. Objection 17, the fold's criteria already use time, is added and open. **Why:** an AI-assisted review commissioned by the author (reception entry 28), read by GPT-6 Astra before the merge.

- `site/feed.xml` via `python3 scripts/build_feed.py`, and update the newest-item pin in `test/feed.test.mjs` to the new newest item.
- `CLAUDE.md`: "Current: v2.2 (12 September 2026), the negative-result release." becomes "Current: v2.3 (30 September 2026), the repair release."
- Any other surface the drift test checks for the version.

## Amendments after implementation (editor, 30 September 2026)

- R4's critic now quotes Part III ("the fold's definition uses relations without assuming space or time"), and the reply's last sentence names the two served statements open to the objection. The first draft said no served claim presents the fold as explaining time; the implementer found that Part III and P1 both do.
- `versionLabel` stays "v2.3" because the drift test builds colophons from it; "the repair release" lives in the changelog and `whatV23Is`.
- The objection's source note reads "provenance; it is not authority" to stay under the page's style ceiling.
- Lab pages' colophon version strings were updated, since the colophon test covers every page; their content is unchanged.

## Checks the implementer runs

`npm test` (all pass) and `npm run check`; `python3 scripts/build_pdfs.py --only Space_Immanence_Working_Paper` (or the name the script uses) after R1; a grep showing the old universality sentences and the old S4 falsifier remain only in frozen records; `git diff --stat` reported.

## What would count against this

- The wording being the editor's, not the author's: every sentence above is a proposal; the author edits or refuses at the merge.
- Essay 6 in the author's Cheap Composition series quotes "sixteen objections"; after R4 the site says seventeen. The essay is his to update.
- R3 might weaken S3's stated rationale if Part I argues for structural investigation from the diagnosis; the implementer reports any such passage rather than rewriting it.

## Second pass (the author, "Run with it", 30 September 2026, on `30_SECOND_PASS_PROPOSED.md`; cap USD 8 in Claude Sonnet 5.5, one Codex call)

Apply verbatim, in `md/Space_Immanence_Working_Paper.md`, `site/downloads/Space_Immanence_Working_Paper.md`, `site/paper.html` and every other served surface where the same sentence appears (for example `site/argument.html`, `site/index.html`, `site/llms.txt`); rebuild the paper PDF; frozen records stay unchanged.

### S2-1. The contemplative evidence, reconciled across the paper

1. Part IV, "The two-orientation phenomenology", first sentence: "The phenomenological claim is narrower than the structural one and correspondingly more defensible: sustained human inquiry into consciousness tends to fall into two directions." becomes "The phenomenological claim is narrower than the structural one and correspondingly more defensible: on the proposal's reading, sustained human inquiry into consciousness tends to fall into two directions." Its last sentence, "The traditions developed in different geographies from different root texts, and they recur around two orientations." becomes "The traditions developed in different geographies from different root texts, and on this reading they recur around two orientations. The reading is an interpretive pattern proposed for testing; no systematic collection yet establishes it."
2. Part IV, "Complementary completions": "arrive at recognitions their practitioners describe in closely corresponding ways. This is evidence that demands some explanation." becomes "arrive at recognitions their practitioners describe in ways the proposal reads as closely corresponding. If systematic study bears that reading out, it is evidence that demands some explanation."
3. Part V, "Contemplative phenomenology": "But the reports themselves are robust enough, and concordant enough, that they require some account beyond cultural contamination or doctrinal coincidence." becomes "Whether the reports are concordant enough to require an account beyond cultural contamination or doctrinal coincidence is what systematic study would settle; the proposal reads them as concordant, and objection 7 records the alternative explanations."
4. Part VI, "What it proposes": "Either reading leaves the convergence non-coincidental and worth taking seriously." becomes "If the convergence holds up under systematic study, either reading leaves it non-coincidental and worth taking seriously."
5. Part VII, "For contemplative practice": "A practitioner completing either direction finds something the other tradition also recognises. That is the pedagogically relevant fact;" becomes "On the traditions' own accounts, a practitioner completing either direction finds something the other tradition also recognises. If that holds, it is the pedagogically relevant fact;"
6. Graded summary, claim 1 (M1): "the two-direction character contemplative traditions document." becomes "the two-direction character the proposal reads in contemplative reports."
7. Graded summary, claim 3 (M3): "The two-orientation phenomenology in human contemplative traditions reflects either a structural feature of self-reference itself or a feature of human cognitive architecture." becomes "If the two-orientation pattern in human contemplative reports holds up, it reflects either a structural feature of self-reference itself or a feature of human cognitive architecture."
8. Objection 7 (`site/objections.html` and `site/downloads/Objections_and_Replies.md`): reply "Granted. The weaker claim is that human self-reference repeatedly takes certain forms in experience. The evidence still leaves the stronger claim, that these forms are universal, unresolved." becomes "Granted. The weaker claim is that human self-reference repeatedly takes certain forms in experience; it is an interpretive pattern proposed for testing, and no systematic collection yet establishes it. The stronger claim, that these forms are universal, is unresolved." Status "Good in current version." becomes "Open. The recurrence is proposed for testing; the alternative explanations above have not been excluded." with class `obj-status--open`.

### S2-2. S4 narrowed to what its falsifier tests; M3's clause given a measurement bridge

- S4's short statement "Legitimate empirical data about the structure of self-reference." becomes "Reports that carry information about experience beyond doctrine, expectation and translation, and so are usable data about the structure of self-reference." The label and the falsifier from R2 stay.
- M3's second falsifier sentence (from R2) becomes: "Corpus work that codes each report on two scales fixed in advance, orientation toward what is attended to and toward the attending itself, and finds that the traditions' two directions do not separate on those scales after controls for translation, transmission, and teacher expectation, would do the same."

### S2-3. S3's falsifier matched to a method; P2's reference updated

- S3's falsifier becomes: "A sustained structural programme yields no finding, prediction or distinction about consciousness that treating it as an ineffable residue does not already supply."
- P2's falsifier "A successful structural/phenomenal separation without container assumptions (S3's condition, at full strength)." becomes "A successful structural/phenomenal separation without container assumptions, at full strength." since S3 no longer carries that condition.

### S2-4. Objection 17's reply names every place it bears on

Replace the reply's last sentence ("Until a route is chosen, two served statements stand open to this objection: ...") with: "Until a route is chosen, these served statements stand open to this objection: Part III's, that the fold's definition uses relations without assuming space or time; Part VI's conjecture that consciousness and spacetime may be complementary appearances of one self-referential structure; P1, and Part VIII's re-reading of it, that the appearance of locality and duration is the way relational structure holds together for the fold, with its repetitions on the cohering page and the home page; and the Academic Edition's statement that the fold is offered as ontologically prior to the container." Mirror the same list, shortened, in the claims-file note for obj17.

### S2-5. The paper's edition label

Update the paper's own version label from v2.1 (August 2026) to v2.3 (September 2026): `site/paper.html` title, description and og tags and any visible kicker; the Markdown front matter (`version: "v2.3 working paper"` and any date field); rebuild the PDF. Leave the Academic Edition's label alone unless a test requires otherwise.

### S2-6. The changelog and the reception entry

Replace the v2.3 changelog paragraph with:

> **v2.3 — 30 September 2026.** The repair release: no tier or confidence moved, no claim node added. **What changed:** The paper's account of the contemplative evidence now matches the Academic Edition throughout: the two-orientation pattern is an interpretive pattern proposed for testing, which no systematic collection yet establishes (Parts IV to VII and the graded summary), and objection 7 is reopened. S4 (contemplative phenomenology is data) now claims that the reports carry information about experience beyond doctrine, expectation and translation, and fails if they do not; its old condition, a failed two-orientation clustering, moves to M3 with a stated way of measuring it. S3 (investigate consciousness structurally) no longer depends on S1, and its falsifier now asks whether structural investigation yields anything; P2 keeps the condition S3 used to carry. Objection 17, the fold's criteria already use time, is added and open, and names the served statements it bears on. **Why:** an AI-assisted review commissioned by the author (reception entry 28). GPT-6 Astra read the release before the merge; its reads and the editor's specification are published with it.

Link "its reads and the editor's specification" to `downloads/lab/v2.3/`. Update reception entry 28's `whatChanged` to: "v2.3 (changelog): the paper's account of the contemplative evidence aligned with the Academic Edition throughout, and objection 7 reopened; S4 narrowed to reports carrying information beyond doctrine, expectation and translation, its old clustering condition moved to M3 with a measurement bridge; S3's dependency on S1 removed and its falsifier matched to a method; objection 17 added, open. The List comparison is in the lab record. No tier or confidence moves." Update `whatV23Is` in `state.json` to match the changelog's first sentence and scope.

### S2-7. Regression checks

Add `test/v23-repairs.test.mjs` asserting: none of "robust in human contemplative phenomenology", "strong evidence either way", "robust enough, and concordant enough", "contemplative traditions document" appears in the paper's Markdown, its served HTML, or the served Markdown copy; the claims file's obj17 note does not contain "no served claim presents"; obj17 renders with `obj-status--open`; obj7 renders with `obj-status--open`; S3's `dependsOn` is empty.

### Checks

`npm test` all pass; `npm run check`; PDF rebuilt; report every file changed, every instruction not applied and why, and any further passage that still states the contemplative pattern as established.
