# Which way does H1 point? The site states two opposite pairings

**Type:** correction finding (lab type) · **Date:** 5 October 2026 · **Status:** finding for the author, checked narrowly at the outside read of the correction candidate (`../22_correction_2026-10-05/10_read_astra.md`: the paper leaves the pairing unstated and the site's statements conflict; the Positions page supports the pre-registration contextually without fixing the labels); nothing on the site changes without his decision · **Author:** Claude Opus 5.5 (editor), found while preparing the overnight work · **Cost:** none

## The finding

The working paper (Part IV) says: "Zen's intimacy with *this*. Advaita's dissolution into *that*." It never says which of the two orientations, toward represented content or toward representational activity (awareness), is *this* and which is *that*.

Two places on the site fill that gap, in opposite ways:
- **The research agenda (`site/research.html`, H1):** "toward represented content / world / *that*; toward representational activity / awareness / *this*". Read with Part IV, Zen (*this*) leans toward **awareness**, and Advaita (*that*) toward content, or the world.
- **The editor's H1 pre-registration (`research/lab/19_mpe_h1/00_PREREG.md`):** "toward represented content (*this*) and toward representational activity, the modelling itself (*that*)". Read with Part IV, Zen (*this*) leans toward **content**, and Advaita (*that*) toward awareness. On this reading the test predicted Zen minus TM > 0 in "content minus awareness".

The pre-registration presented its pairing as "the paper's account". It was the editor's reading, and it contradicts the site's own research agenda. The editor did not check the agenda before filing.

## What it changes

- **The H1 records' "predicted direction" is the pre-registration's direction, not the paper's.** Every H1 record (`30_RESULT.md`, `60_RESULT_RUN3.md`, `90_ALL_CODINGS_RESULT.md`) describes results "in the predicted direction". That is accurate about the pre-registration and should not be read as the paper's prediction.
- **Under the research agenda's pairing, the sign flips.** The small positive difference the exploratory analysis found (typically about 4 points across sampled codings, about 3.5 for the blind paper-priority readers) would then lean slightly against the prediction, not toward it. Neither reading's result is a filing-compliant test, so no claim moves on either. The direction matters for any future confirmatory test.
- **The site's Positions page points one way.** Its comparisons (`site/readings.html`) say that Advaita "gives awareness priority" over the world, and read Dōgen's Zen as a self "actualized by the myriad things", arising through the world. Read with Part IV ("Zen's intimacy with *this*. Advaita's dissolution into *that*."), that pairs Zen and *this* with the world, or content, and Advaita and *that* with awareness: the pre-registration's pairing. The research agenda's bullet is the outlier among the site's own statements. (Added after the first draft, 5 October 2026.)
- **The editor's interpretation: both readings are defensible.** Zen's "just this" can be read as immediacy with what appears (content) or as bare presence (awareness). Advaita's "That" (Brahman) can be read as pure awareness, or as dissolution into the whole. The traditions do not settle the paper's pairing, so the paper must.

## Decision for the author (level 3)

Say which orientation the paper means by *this* and which by *that*, in one sentence in Part IV. Then align the research agenda's H1 bullet, or the H1 records' framing, to it. The editor's recommendation: content is *this* and awareness is *that*, matching the Positions page and the traditions' own usage (Advaita's *tat*, "That", for awareness as Brahman), and the research agenda's bullet is corrected. Until then, the honest description of the H1 work is: a small Zen–TM difference in content-minus-awareness, positive under most codings, whose relation to the paper's prediction depends on a pairing the paper has not stated.

## Decided (5 October 2026)

The author took the recommendation ("We can do all of these except 5", 5 October 2026, on the editor's proposal whose second step was this clarification): *this* is the orientation toward represented content and *that* toward awareness, stated in Part IV from version 2.4; the research agenda's list is corrected. The decision came after the exploratory all-codings analysis had been seen, and under this pairing that analysis leans slightly toward the pre-registration's prediction. The grounds given are the Positions page's readings and the traditions' usage; the H1 results remain exploratory, and no claim moves on them.

**Added 6 October 2026, before the merge (the author: "add the Stace sentence to v2.4, then merge").** Stace's classic typology of mystical experience (*Mysticism and Philosophy*, 1960) gives the pairing's Zen–Advaita split no independent support: it treats Advaita's pure consciousness as introvertive, and an outside read of the text found its Zen satori example discussed on the same side. The site had not cited Stace or the Mysticism Scale literature built on his typology (`research/lab/25_stace_hood/`, served at `/downloads/lab/stace-hood/`).

## What would count against this

- A passage elsewhere in the paper, Academic Edition or Aperture Framework that fixes the pairing. The editor searched the working paper, the Academic Edition and the served pages for the italic words next to "content" or "awareness" and found only the two places above.
- The research agenda's bullet being a deliberate statement of the paper's view, in which case the pre-registration, not the agenda, is what needs correcting.
