# Strong without P2: the hardness of the hard problem lives in its direction

## The claim

The strong reading of S1 can be argued from one feature of the hard problem alone: its direction. Part I already says that "deducibility needs a direction, and the direction is doing the work", that the direction pictures experience as "a further item the physical base must supply", and that this picture "is containment in modal dress". It then adds a second step, "if experience is not a content at all, if it is the being-from-within of a certain structure, then the subtraction the zombie intuition performs is not a coherent operation", and says "the strong reading of the diagnosis rests on this step". The conjecture is that the being-from-within step is unnecessary for the weaker replacement of the strong reading proposed here. Two commitments must hold: the hard problem cannot retain its explanatory force without base-and-product ordering, and that ordering can independently be shown to import the containment assumption. I conjecture both. The restatement test probes the first commitment; the argument distinguishing containment from legitimate explanatory priority must address the second. Establishing dependence on ordering alone would not establish a containment error. A parallel necessity claim is proposed for the particular emergence impasse described in Part I: its difficulty cannot survive removal of substrate-to-spacetime grounding. This must be tested separately from removing the picture of emergence as a process already occurring in space and time. ## Its falsifier

A restatement of the hard problem that has both of these properties at once: it assigns no base-and-product ordering between the physical and the phenomenal (ordering is assessed by the commitments of the formulation, not by a blacklist of words; co-occurrence, the direction in which an inference is attempted, and an epistemic starting point do not by themselves establish that one side grounds or produces the other), and a competent opponent of the proposal, who committed before reading it to a criterion for "this is still the hard problem", accepts that it meets that criterion. Where to look: the five canonical formulations, Nagel 1974 "What is it like to be a bat?", Jackson 1982 "Epiphenomenal qualia", Levine 1983 "Materialism and qualia: the explanatory gap", Chalmers 1995 "Facing up to the problem of consciousness", and Chalmers 2018 "The meta-problem of consciousness". Each is to be rewritten with the ordering removed; if any rewrite keeps its recognised force, the conjecture is wrong. This is related to S1’s second published weakening condition in `site/claims.json`, ‘the hard problem survives careful restatement with no containment assumption’, for which the case against reports no completed test. The conditions are not yet equivalent. An accepted ordering-free formulation defeats this conjecture’s necessity claim; it also meets S1’s condition only if it is independently shown to contain no containment assumption. The recognition criterion and the criterion for absence of grounding must be fixed before candidate formulations are assessed. On the spacetime side the parallel falsifier is a statement of the emergence impasse, in the form Baron 2020 "The curious case of spacetime emergence" gives it, that keeps its difficulty with no substrate ranked as ground; the paper's own concession that "functionalist alternatives remain available" (Lam and Wüthrich 2018 "Spacetime is as spacetime does") is where a reader would start.

## Its cheapest test or argument route

The cheapest route is a counterexample-search pilot: prepare candidate restatements of the five named formulations, recording which commitments each edit removes. The provisional estimate is two to four hours of one philosopher’s time for this consciousness pilot; the spacetime comparison and external review require separate estimates. Each candidate has three possible outcomes: it retains grounding, loses the recognised explanatory problem, or retains that problem without grounding. The third defeats the necessity claim. Failure to find it in five attempts establishes only failure to find a counterexample in that search. A completed argument would bear on S1, subject to the author’s assessment of its revised wording and dependencies. Adding a dependency from S1 to P2 would create a cycle with the existing reverse dependency and would therefore require a broader graph revision. No transfer rule for this conjecture is established by the supplied record. The case against reports a programme transfer limited to S1’s weak reading. A counterexample independently satisfying S1’s published no-containment condition would warrant reconsideration through the correction machinery, but the packet specifies no automatic tier or confidence change. Mere failure to find a counterexample would move nothing.

## What would count against this

- Direction turns out to be explanatory priority with no containment in it. If a reader shows that "base" and "must supply" name an order of explanation and no picture of location, then the paper's reading of the verbs ("produced by it, located downstream of it, present in the world over and above it") is the only bridge from direction to containment, and the conjecture has moved the strong reading's dependency from P2 onto an unargued equation rather than removed it.
- No opponent will commit to a recognition criterion before seeing the restatements. Then the proposed human assessment cannot run as specified and remains unperformed; this is neither confirmation nor refutation. Advance recognition criteria serve a different purpose from the advance rival predictions required by objection 12.
- A symmetric formulation already exists and is treated as the hard problem. If the literature already states the gap as mutual non-entailment between physical and phenomenal descriptions with no ranking, and that statement is received as the hard problem, the conjecture is false before anything is run, and the record should say so.
- The procedure proves too much. If removing explanatory ordering also removes otherwise legitimate explanatory questions, disappearance of the hard problem would not identify a distinctive containment error. Matched comparison problems would help expose this possibility. Part VI requires the reframing to earn its place by explaining or dissolving something the container picture cannot; loss of recognisability alone would not meet that standard.
